I do use the "show hold" when necessary—that's when you securely hold them at the base of the tail—but when I'm just bonding or hanging out with them, I prefer to use a bonding bag.

The bonding bag also softens your grip. Prey animals instinctively dislike being grabbed—after all, we are predators from their perspective. The bag acts as a gentle barrier between your hands and your chinchilla, making them feel freer and safer in your arms. And if they do get spooked, they’re more likely to retreat into the pouch and hide than to launch themselves out of your grasp. That’s a nice bonus, too.
