Where should you to get your pet Chinchilla?
Well, there are many options. Purchasing a kit or retired animal from a great breeder provides a well-socialized, genetically sound pet. Adopting a Chinchilla from an exotic rescue gives a rescue animal a second chance at a good life. Bringing home an owner rehome helps an owner and pet in need too. Another option is purchasing from a local or chain pet store but this requires you to exercise caution as these animals are generally wholesale animals and may come from breeding mills. What shouldn’t be considered an option is supporting backyard breeders who often list on online ad Sites to flip the animals they produce, which are often inappropriately cared for and ill.
We wholeheartedly support both adopting and purchasing a new pet, and our ultimate aim is to equip you with the necessary resources to make an informed decision. We understand that bringing a pet into your home is a significant choice, and we are making this list to assist you in finding a companion you'll cherish for its entire life. Adopting owner surrenders from local exotic rescues and yes, sometimes breeders, offers a wonderful opportunity to provide a loving home to a chinchilla in need. Together they work tirelessly to rescue, care for, and rehome abandoned or surrendered pets, including chinchillas. By choosing adoption, you not only give an animal a second chance at a fulfilling life but also support the life-saving efforts of these groups.
Additionally, reaching out to reputable local breeders can be a responsible way to find a pet chinchilla too. Many of these breeders deeply care about the well-being of chinchillas and may take in owner surrenders to assist animals in need, but purchasing from a responsible breeder not only ensures that you acquire a well-bred and healthy pet but also supports their dedication to maintaining the well-being of their breeding herds.
If you decide to adopt or purchase a chinchilla, it's essential to remain committed to its well-being throughout its entire life. Chinchillas have long lifespans of up to 20 years or more, so responsible pet ownership involves providing proper nutrition, regular veterinary care, a safe cool environment, and plenty of stimulation.

I will differentiate between breeders and rescues, but it's important to recognize that many conscientious breeders also extend their efforts to rescue chinchillas in need and accept owner surrenders when they have the capacity. They prioritize rehoming these animals over selling one from their own breeding, embodying a compassionate commitment to the chinchilla community. This way, breeders contribute positively to the overall chinchilla population while practicing responsible animal care.

Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of these beloved pets.
Why do we support breeders, I thought all rescue volunteers believe in “ don’t shop, adopt! “.
In my experience, the chinchillas that find themselves in rescue's care often come from pet homes where thorough research was not conducted, leading to improper care and neglect of the animals. It's disheartening to witness these situations, and it reinforces the importance of responsible pet ownership. On the other hand, we have never had to take animals in from reputable breeders who demonstrate a genuine commitment to their animals' well-being. That is why, based on our experience, we fully support purchasing chinchillas from good breeders who plan for and prioritize the health and happiness of their animals.
It's crucial to acknowledge that not all breeders are the same, and responsible breeders play a significant role in maintaining the health and quality of the chinchilla population. By purchasing from reputable breeders, you are more likely to acquire a well-socialized, healthy, and genetically sound chinchilla. Responsible breeders take great care in their breeding practices, ensuring that their chinchillas are well cared for, genetically diverse, and free from hereditary health issues. Owner Surrenders & Rescue animals should never be used in breeding programs.
We advocate for adopting from rescues and shelters as a first choice, but we also recognize that responsible breeders contribute positively to the well-being of chinchillas. The key is to be diligent in selecting a reputable source and to prioritize the welfare of these adorable animals in every decision we make. We personally own pets of our own from both rescues and breeders.
